Introduction

After gaining four years of work experience, EITs and EIs can go on to take the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam to qualify for licensure. Several states require engineers to participate in professional development activities in order to keep their licenses. The FE exam is generally your first step in the process of becoming a licensed professional engineer (P.E.). It is designed for recent graduates and students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited program. The FE exam is a computer-based exam. Neither U.S. Citizenship nor California residency is required for licensure; however, disclosure of the applicant’s Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is mandatory.
