Introduction
Under the new Takaichi Cabinet, Japan is set to tighten regulations on large-scale solar power plants, also known as "mega solar" projects. Solar facilities have been expanding rapidly across the country, prompting local governments to step up restrictions to protect. Mega solar projects are expanding faster than local governments can manage, raising major concerns for landscapes, wildlife, and nearby communities. Under the new Takaichi Cabinet, Japan is set to tighten regulations on large-scale solar power plants, also known as "mega solar" projects. Solar. To encourage the generation of renewable energy, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government introduced a regulation mandating the installation of solar panels on the roofs of new detached buildings starting in April 2025. The new regulation will require large house builders—those undertaking projects. Japan’s 6th Strategic Energy Plan (released in 2021) and the GX (Green Transformation) Decarbonization Power Supply Bill (released in 2023) target increasing the share of non-fossil fuel generation sources to 59% of the generation mix by 2030 compared with 31% in 2022. Policies target an increase. This policy responds to the mounting concerns about environmental impacts, landscape disruptions, and community friction associated with ground-mounted large-scale solar power installations. This is what is often referred to as 'Mega-Solar'. The government has structured its package around the. ffective models for accelerating renewable deployment. These approaches can be scaled nationally by reforming transmission regulation and financing, supporting proactive zoning and planning, promoting the use of power purchase agreementsan’s renewable energy targets and actual deployment. While. Japan’s Sixth Strategic Energy Plan was agreed in 2021, and formed a plan for 2030. It includes a large planned scale-up of solar, an increase in onshore wind, and a new offshore wind industry. On 29th May 2024, METI published a renewable energy progress document of the Sixth Plan. Here we.
