Currently, liquid hydrogen is transported and stored using spherical storage tanks. However, these are not ideal for large-scale use. A European consortium led by the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) is therefore working on a new, pioneering storage concept. Hydrogen is only useful to the energy system if it can be stored safely and transported reliably. In the future, the need for storage of large quantities of hydrogen will increase sharply.
