Introduction
As of December 2025, around 23.9 lakh households have already installed these systems, generating 7 GW of clean power. Solar power now stands at 129 GW, while the overall non-fossil capacity has crossed 259 GW as of October 2025. India added more than 40 GW of solar and wind capacity in 2025, while grid constraints, power contracting delays, and supply chain risks continued to affect project execution. From pv magazine India Over the past decade, India’s renewable energy journey has been one of scale, speed, and structural. India made 1,08,494 GWh of solar power, more than Japan’s 96,459 GWh, and became the world’s third-biggest solar energy producer. India’s solar module manufacturing capacity jumped from 38 GW to 74 GW during FY 2024–25. Introduction Just a decade ago, India’s solar landscape was in its infancy. In 2025, India’s clean energy transition marked a significant milestone with rooftop solar emerging as one of the fastest-growing segments in the renewable energy landscape. The unprecedented surge in rooftop adoption driven by affordability, efficiency, and enhanced energy control has. As of December 2025, around 23.9 lakh households have already installed these systems, generating 7 GW of clean power. Solar power now stands at 129 GW, while the overall non-fossil capacity has crossed 259 GW as of October 2025. India's solar momentum is shaping a major shift in the country's. In order to achieve the above target, Government of India have launched various schemes to encourage generation of solar power in the country like Solar Park Scheme, VGF Schemes, CPSU Scheme, Defence Scheme, Canal bank & Canal top Scheme, Bundling Scheme, Grid Connected Solar Rooftop Scheme etc. Oxford Energy Senior Research Fellow Mohua Mukherjee explains where rooftop solar (RTS) fits in today’s energy sector in India. Why are RTS projects lagging far behind utility-scale solar projects in the country? What is being done by the government to increase the pace of RTS installations and why.
